Cats love Catnip, and yes, it’s perfectly safe! ?

So what is Catnip & why do cats love it?

Catnip is a perennial herb from the mint family. The active compound in catnip is nepetalactone which the cats smell.
All cats have different reactions to catnip and about 30% may not even respond. Many cats simply don’t have the receptors to be affected by catnip. Interestingly, kittens don’t generally respond to catnip until they are older than 6 months. You may also find that as your cat gets older, they lose interest in catnip.
Catnip acts as a natural mood enhancer. Behaviors can vary from playfulness to excitement to just relaxed and starring. All of these behaviours are normal effects of catnip. The effects of catnip are short, usually lasting between 5 to 15 minutes. After that, it will be a couple of hours before a cat will react to the effects of catnip again.

So why give catnip to your cat?
Because it makes as a great treat for them and can be used during training or to encourage a cat to use a scratching post or sleep in their own bed. It can also be a good way to encourage your cat to exercise, as well as just help your cat to relax. Whatever the reason, it’s good fun!

How should you give catnip to your cat?
Catnip products come in a variety of forms, from catnip flakes to catnip balls to catnip spray which can be used to scent their bedding and toys. Or you can even plant a catnip plant! Cats will react to even a small amount of catnip so you don’t need to use very much for them to enjoy the fun of catnip.
